A few people asked me about this, so I'm sharing it with everyone, and especially with the women wondering if there's a way into tech that won't cost them thousands.

Cyber security is one of the fastest-growing fields in the country.
The demand is real, the salaries are strong, and let's be honest, it's still a room that doesn't have nearly enough women in it.
That's exactly why the tuition is being covered. Australia needs more skilled people in this space, and fast.
A free, government-backed way in doesn't come along often, and initiatives like this don't stay open forever.
What "Free" Really Covers
I'm never going to oversell something to you, so here's the honest fine print before you get excited.
"Fee-free" means tuition. You might still cover small costs like materials, textbooks, and the occasional bit of equipment. But next to the thousands you'd normally pay in course fees, that's a rounding error. It's the difference between "I can't afford to retrain" and "okay, I can actually do this."

Check If You're Eligible
Before you get excited, it's worth knowing the criteria, because "fee-free" comes with a few conditions.
- 🇦🇺Residency: you'll need to be an Australian resident to apply (international students follow a separate path).
- 🎂Your situation matters: eligibility can depend on your residency status, age, and previous study.
- 🪑Places are limited: if all the fee-free spots are taken, you may be offered a subsidised (still heavily discounted) place instead.
- 📚Not everything's covered: tuition is free, but you'll still budget for materials, textbooks, and any placement costs.
- ⏫Entry level: in SA the Certificate IV in Cyber Security isn't entry-level. TAFE SA generally recommends a Certificate III in IT or relevant experience first.
Applications go through SATAC, they're free, and you can list up to three course preferences in a single application. That means you can add a beginner IT course as a backup preference if you're not eligible for the Cert IV yet.
